Characterization of dioxygenases and biosurfactants produced by crude oil degrading soil bacteria BJM
Muthukamalam,Santhakumar; Sivagangavathi,Sivalingam; Dhrishya,Dharmapal; Sudha Rani,Sadras.
ABSTRACT Role of microbes in bioremediation of oil spills has become inevitable owing to their eco friendly nature. This study focused on the isolation and characterization of bacterial strains with superior oil degrading potential from crude-oil contaminated soil. Three such bacterial strains were selected and subsequently identified by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis as Corynebacterium aurimucosum, Acinetobacter baumannii and Microbacterium hydrocarbonoxydans respectively. The specific activity of catechol 1,2 dioxygenase (C12O) and catechol 2,3 dioxygenase (C23O) was determined in these three strains wherein the activity of C12O was more than that of C23O. Among the three strains, Microbacterium hydrocarbonoxydans exhibited superior crude oil degrading...

Effects of petroleum biodegradation products on phytoplankton growth. ArchiMer
Goutx, H; Berland, B; Leveau, M; Bertrand, J.
The effects of products resulting from petroleum biodegradation in continuous culture, have been studied on the growth of two marine algae. Sugars, lipids and amino acids are the main components resulting from petroleum degradation in the bacteria used medium. Their concentrations are respectively 600 mg.l super(-1), 46 mg.l super(-1) and 74.2 mu M.l super(-1). The algae growth is inhibited when products are enough concentrated; it is stimulated by low concentration. Among these products, lipids are more toxic than others. The two species show different sensitivity towards the used medium. Prorocentrum micans growth is more inhibited than that of Phaeodactylum tricornutum .

Factors influencing crude oil biodegradation by Yarrowia lipolytica BABT
Ferreira,Tatiana Felix; Coelho,Maria Alice Zarur; Rocha-Leão,Maria Helena Miguez da.
Yarrowia lipolytica is unique strictly aerobic yeast with the ability to efficiently degrade hydrophobic substrates such as n-alkenes, fatty acids, glycerol and oils. In the present work, a 2(4) full factorial design was used to investigate the influence of the independent variables of temperature, agitation, initial cell concentration and initial petroleum concentration on crude oil biodegradation. The results showed that all variables studied had significant effects on the biodegradation process. Temperature, agitation speed and initial cell concentration had positive effects, and initial petroleum concentration had a negative effect. Among the crude oil removal conditions studied, the best temperature and agitation conditions were 28ºC and 250 rpm,...

Interdependencies in the Energy-Bioenergy-Food Price Systems: A Cointegration Analysis AgEcon
Ciaian, Pavel; Kancs, d'Artis.
The present paper examines a long-run relationship between the energy, bioenergy and food prices. In the recent years the bioenergy production has increased significantly around the world. The increase has been driven by rising energy prices as well as by environmental policies aiming at reducing the harmful effects of conventional sources of energy, such as climate change. Bioenergy, in turn, affects agricultural markets, because it uses agricultural commodities as inputs. The theoretical model we develop predicts that, because of price inelastic food demand, the agricultural price increase may be substantial. The empirical findings confirm the theoretical hypothesis that energy prices do affect prices of agricultural commodities. However, the...

Spatial Marketing Patterns for Corn Under the Condition of Increasing Ethanol Production in the U.S. AgEcon
Conley, Dennis M.; George, Adam.
Events external to agriculture have set in motion the conditions for structural change in the marketing of corn in the U.S. These included a rapid increase in the price of crude oil from $40 per barrel to over $100 caused by hurricanes, geopolitical events, an increased global demand for energy from countries like China and India, and in December 2007, the U.S. raising the renewable fuel standards. The results of this research show that there could be significant changes in the historical utilization and marketing of corn in the U.S. The change in movement patterns provides one source of visible evidence that a structural change is underway.

The Relationship between Oil, Exchange Rates, and Commodity Prices AgEcon
Harri, Ardian; Nalley, Lawton Lanier; Hudson, Darren.
Exchange rates have long been thought to have an important impact on the export and import of goods and services, and, thus, exchange rates are expected to influence the price of those products that are traded. At the same time, energy impacts commodity production in some very important ways. The use of chemical and petroleum derived inputs has increased in agriculture over time; the prices of these critical inputs, then, would be expected to alter supply, and, therefore, the prices of commodities using these inputs. Also, agricultural commodities have been increasingly used to produce energy, thereby leading to an expectation of a linkage between energy and commodity markets. In this paper, we examine the price relationship through time of the primary...

USING THE CRUDE OIL AND HEATING OIL MARKETS FOR DIESEL FUEL PURCHASING DECISIONS AgEcon
Dhuyvetter, Kevin C.; Dean, Erik; Parcell, Joseph L..
Agricultural producers and input suppliers must regularly make decisions based on forecasts; however, most publicly available forecasts are for outputs. Research has shown the importance of being a low-cost operator. Thus, focusing on inputs may be beneficial. The objective of this research was to estimate models based on futures markets to forecast diesel fuel prices. Results suggest diesel fuel prices forecasted using the crude oil or heating oil futures market are reasonably accurate, and that this approach is superior to using a historical average. Based on out-of-sample price predictions, producers could profitably use crude oil futures-based models to make diesel fuel purchasing decisions. While the gains from following a model-based decision rule...

Variations metaboliques des communautes bacteriennes lors d'une pollution par petrole brut, avec ou sans traitement ArchiMer
Cauchi, B.
Metabolic potentialities of bacterial communities in marine water after Crude Oil pollution (Arabian Light) and in marine water after pollution and treatment (enrichment: Inipol EAP 22) have been studied and compared. With data analysis: regressions, hierarchical ascending classification and multifactor correspondence analysis, the treatment gives rise to conservation and one increase of enzymatic pool (second day) of the bacterial sample as a combined metabolic homogeneity contrary to pollution impact. The direct assimilation of hydrocarbons looks more regular and slow without treatment.

What Drives Commodity Prices More: Oil Demand or Supply Shocks? AgEcon
Mutuc, Maria Erlinda M.; Pan, Suwen; Hudson, Darren.
This paper shows that the response of agricultural commodity prices in the U.S. related to fluctuations in oil prices in the international market may differ greatly depending on whether the increase is driven by demand or supply shocks in the crude oil market. In the long-run, around 2-7 percent of the variability in grains, oilseeds, and cotton prices can be attributed to shocks to aggregate demand for industrial commodities while none can be traced to oil supply shocks. This paper improves on the lack of economic structure in VAR models employed so far, and on the issue of short datasets, contributes to the nascent empirical evidence, and identifies the transmission of different types of oil price shocks to movements in agricultural prices in a SVAR...
